Washington University Faculty Grants for Projects on Ethical Issues

The Faculty Research Grant program is intended to assist faculty in undertaking projects in ethics and human values. These awards are designed to encourage a broad spectrum of research projects, from non-clinical pilot research to review articles to collaborative and interdisciplinary discussions and debates on topics in ethics and human values. The maximum award for each grant will be $5,000. The amount of each award will depend upon the specific needs of the program being planned. Smaller grant requests and collaborative sources for funding are encouraged.

Examples of projects include primary research, innovative book and journal targeted research projects as well as lectures, debates, workshops, journal clubs, reading groups, or new course development that approaches ethics from an interdisciplinary perspective. Descriptions of previous grants awarded may be found at http://humanvalues.wustl.edu/.

Preference will be given to projects that:

(a) focus on matters concerning ethics and values,
(b) involve faculty or graduate students from multiple departments and schools,
(c) involve novel research, and/or
(d) address the concerns of and engage the St. Louis community.

Grant applications should include:

(1) a brief written description of the activity to be funded (three pages),
(2) a proposed budget, and
(3) a basic C.V. for key participants (max. two pages per participant).

Faculty grants may be used to cover: (a) Project expenses, e.g. travel costs to archival collections or a research venue, books, reading packets, room reservations, film rentals, meals, or meeting refreshments, etc., (b) Stipends for graduate or undergraduate assistants conducting research or providing assistance related to the project, (c) Travel costs and/or honoraria for invited, non-WU speakers. Additional expenses not noted above will be considered as appropriate.

Project funding may extend through the calendar year of 2009. Administrative assistance will be available to grant recipients for help in planning and conducting these events and programs.

Restrictions: Funding will not cover the purchase of equipment, honoraria for WU faculty, or expenses typically covered through other sources.

Deadline: Applications are due on Friday, April 4, 2008 at 5:00 pm. Awards will be announced early in May.
